Sausage and Cabbage Skillet WIN!!!

So, I tried another Pinterest recipe tonight.  It called for Kielbasa, but I didn't have any, and after mowing my front lawn (after MONTHS of neglect..that's another blog post), I didn't feel like going to the store, so I used what I had, some chicken and apple sausages.  I ate it with some white rice of course.
Here is my Sausage and Cabbage Skillet!  What do you think?
The key was to cook and brown the sausage first.  Leave it in the skillet with a little oil and let it get that yummy crispiness.  Take it out onto a plate and brown the garlic and onions in the leftover oil.  Once those have browned, then add the cabbage and I added some water and let all the flavors meld together.  Then, add the meat back in. I didn't add the sugar, vinegar or the mustard in the recipe.  I'm just simple like that.
This is the recipe I followed, with my blue corrections:
Ingredients
• 2 pounds fully cooked polska kielbasa,
apple and chicken sausages, cut in half lengthwise, then cut into 2 inch pieces

• 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive vegetable oil
• 1 head cabbage, coarsely chopped
• 1 large sweet onion, cut into large pieces
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar
• 1 1/2 teaspoons dijon or brown grainy mustard
Directions
Heat olive oil in a large nonstick sauté pan over medium-high and add kielbasa sausage. Cook, without stirring for 1 minute. Then stir occasionally for about 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon.
In the same pan with some of the rendered kielbasa fat, add the cabbage, onion, garlic, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and cook for about 10 minutes. Add in the cabbage and 1/2 cup of water and cover with at lid to let all the flavors meld and the cabbage to steam.  Mix in the vinegar and mustard; add the sausage back to the pan and cook for another 2 minutes to heat through. Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary.
My mom used to tease me because I used to always mix my meal all together.  She liked to eat with her bowl of rice and take pieces of meat or vegetables one at a time as she ate, you know, family style.  She would always laugh that I would mix it all together.  I would do that with stew and rice and she would tease me that I was "eating like a baby."  She said she would mix food like that to feed a baby, and it was not a way an adult should eat.  This dish made me think of my mom.

Thank you for checking in!
